Nestled in the heart of the Pushlav Valley
The southernmost of Graubünden’s 150 stunning valleys, lies the small village of Le Prese. It is here, surrounded by majestic mountain slopes, that Reto Raselli, fondly known as the “Alpine Herb King,” was born and raised. Today, this picturesque region is home to Raselli’s organic herb farm, a thriving operation where over 15 hectares of premium herbs are cultivated and harvested with care.
Raselli’s story is as rich and unique as the herbs he grows. Initially trained as a car mechanic, he spent his youth traveling through Afghanistan and Pakistan, absorbing cultures and experiences. Upon returning home, Raselli pivoted to agriculture, attending farming school and leasing land from those who had left the valley. What started in 1981 with just 500 square meters of land has grown into Raselli Azienda Agricola Biologica, a family-run enterprise that is now the last remaining agricultural operation in the valley. His nephew Fabrizio manages the cultivation side of the business, while Reto focuses on processing, sales, and distribution.

The Secret to Raselli’s Success: Timing and Precision
Raselli’s journey as a pioneer in Swiss herb cultivation began with native plants like lady’s mantle, plantain, and nettle. Over the years, his farm has expanded to grow more than 30 varieties of organic herbs and flowers, flourishing at an altitude of 1,000 meters. According to Raselli, the key to success lies in quality seedlings: “Starting with good seedlings is half the battle won,” he explains. Every year, Raselli plants over 600,000 organic-certified seedlings, sourced from Wallis and Thurgau.
Timing is everything when it comes to harvesting. Raselli carefully monitors the growth of his herbs, ensuring they are picked at their peak to maximize their essential oil content. For example, a 40 cm nettle has up to 70% more essential oils than a larger plant. The ideal harvest time is early afternoon when the essential oil levels are at their highest. While much of the harvesting process is mechanized, weeding is done by hand, requiring up to 15 workers during the summer months.
Once harvested, the herbs undergo a meticulous drying process, taking 48 hours at a maximum temperature of 40°C to preserve their quality and potency. From every kilogram of fresh herbs, only one-eighth of the weight remains after drying.

A Legacy of Sustainability and Innovation
Raselli’s commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of his operation. No chemicals are used in the cultivation or processing of his herbs. The farm’s products include tea, spices, medicinal remedies, and decorative flowers. Among the standout creations are the herbs used in Ricola’s iconic lozenges and the Puschlav mountain teas, which were among the first Pro Montagna products offered by Coop. Raselli values these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of supporting regional products that are cultivated and processed entirely in the Alpine region.
However, the unpredictable nature of climate change poses significant challenges. Raselli notes that a harvest of 40 tons is only possible during an exceptionally good season. “No year is ever the same,” he reflects, underscoring the delicate balance between nature and farming. Despite the challenges, Raselli’s dedication remains unwavering, driven by his passion for Alpine herbs and their benefits.
